1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Mai Tong Her for her outstanding leadership and service to the community.
1.3WHEREAS, Mai Tong Her was born in XiengKhoua, Laos, where she was one of the few
1.4Hmong girls whose parents allowed their child to go to school; and
1.5WHEREAS, Mai Tong Her escaped Communist Laos and came to America in 1980 with
1.6her family, who spoke little English; and
1.7WHEREAS, in 1986, Mai Tong Her received her GED from Central High School in St.
1.8Paul; and
1.9WHEREAS, in the 1990s, she began serving the Hmong community in leadership positions
1.10and roles, including President of the Hmong Women Association, Vice-Chair of the Hmong New
1.11Year, Board of Directors for Hmong 18 Council, President of the Hmong American Family, and
1.12founder and President of the Hmong American Mediation Center; and
1.13WHEREAS, in 2011, she attended Hamline University, where she earned a mediation
1.14certificate and license, and subsequently dedicated her time and talents to the community by
1.15providing counseling and mediation services; and
1.16WHEREAS, it is important to recognize Mai Tong Her's outstanding achievements and
1.17volunteer service to many nonprofit organizations within the community. Today, she is an avid
1.18volunteer for the Special Guerilla Unit (SGU) organization along with the Hmong New Year, and
1.19is a champion for civic engagement through get-out-the-vote efforts for many elected officials,
1.20including Senator Foung Hawj; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.22recognizes and honors Mai Tong Her for her leadership, service, and commitment to uphold the
1.23traditions and values of the Asian-Pacific community.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Mai Tong Her.
