1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the Hrvatski Dom on its 100th anniversary.
1.3WHEREAS, our state is enhanced by the presence of those businesses that have withstood
1.4the test of time and 100 years is an ideal occasion to celebrate a business's rich history; and
1.5WHEREAS, at the turn of the 20th century, thousands of Croatians and people of Slavic
1.6descent came to America seeking opportunity and freedom; and
1.7WHEREAS, many Croatians settled in South St. Paul to work at the Union Stockyards and
1.8in the two meat-packing houses, Armours and Swifts; and
1.9WHEREAS, in 1919, Croatians that settled in South St. Paul founded the Hrvatski Dom, or
1.10Croatian Home, which became a place for social events like dances, dinners, weddings, and even
1.11funerals; and
1.12WHEREAS, lodges like this one were formed all across the United States to promote
1.13fraternalism among membership and spread the culture of members' native lands, and today, the
1.14Hrvatski Dom is the only remaining home left in Minnesota; and
1.15WHEREAS, the Hrvatski Dom will celebrate its 100th anniversary from August 23-25,
1.162019, with traditional music, food, and dance; and
1.17WHEREAS, numerous Croatian and Slavic families remain in South St. Paul, including
1.18members of the board of directors for the Hrvatski Dom, while others still assist in maintaining
1.19traditional activities like Sarma dinners or Christmas parties, and Hrvatski Dom generously gives
1.20back to the community of South St. Paul; and
1.21WHEREAS, it is thanks to the continued joint fraternalism of its membership that the Hrvatski
1.22Dom remains a successful, flourishing business today;
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2congratulates the Hrvatski Dom on its 100th anniversary and extends warm wishes to those
2.3celebrating this exemplary local establishment.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.6Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Hrvatski Dom.
