1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring STEM program manager Jim Lynch and the Apple Valley High School STEM
1.3program.
1.4WHEREAS, now in its 39th year, the Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) STEM
1.5Awards recognize excellence and innovation in the field of science, technology, engineering, and math
1.6education at the primary, middle, and high school levels; and
1.7WHEREAS, award applications are evaluated based on the use of interdisciplinary curriculum,
1.8collaboration, design, problem solving, and the STEM experiences offered; and
1.9WHEREAS, in 2014, District 196, which includes Apple Valley, received nearly $3 million through
1.10a federal YouthConnect grant from the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor; and
1.11WHEREAS, the grant allowed Apple Valley High School to forge partnerships with local, national,
1.12and global organizations and implement its E3 STEM program focusing on STEM exploration, education,
1.13and employment; and
1.14WHEREAS, the program has expanded students' opportunities in hands-on, real-world learning and
1.15provided critical exposure to a STEM career pathway; and
1.16WHEREAS, most notably, the grant funded the creation of Apple Valley's fabrication lab, which
1.17has played a key role in helping the school establish a "STEM for All" philosophy by integrating its use into
1.18an increasing number of courses; and
1.19WHEREAS, the lab has interested more students in STEM courses and serves as a bridge connecting
1.20students with varied educational passions; and
1.21WHEREAS, support from the grant also enabled the school to implement a career counseling system
1.22that helps students navigate possible college and career options; and
1.23WHEREAS, over the last four years, the school has become a thriving STEM-focused school, and
1.24with the support of the YouthConnect grant, has provided access for all students and increased participation
1.25in programs that prepare students for success in the 21st century workplace; and
2.1WHEREAS, based on these great innovations, Apple Valley was one of three high school finalists
2.2to be invited to attend the FETC Award ceremony in January 2019 in Orlando, Florida; and
2.3NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.4congratulates Jim Lynch, the Apple Valley High School STEM program, and the Apple Valley parents and
2.5community partners for the program's outstanding success.
2.6BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled
2.7copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
2.8Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Jim Lynch.
