1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing May 7, 2015, as a Day of Prayer in Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, the citizens of the state of Minnesota have roots in many cultures, with nearly
1.4every nationality represented, and honor a variety of religious traditions; and
1.5WHEREAS, the history of our state is replete with leaders who voluntarily called upon
1.6God, whether the need was great or small; and
1.7WHEREAS, civic and national days of prayer have a long and venerable history in our
1.8constitutional republic, dating back to the First Continental Congress in 1775; and
1.9WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence, our first statement as Americans of national
1.10purpose and identity, made "the laws of Nature and of Nature's God" the foundation of our United
1.11States of America and asserted that people have inalienable rights that are God-given; and
1.12WHEREAS, in 1988, legislation setting aside the first Thursday in May in each year as a
1.13National Day of Prayer was passed unanimously by both houses of Congress and signed by the
1.14President; and
1.15WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer is an opportunity for Americans of all faiths to
1.16join in united prayer to acknowledge our dependence on God's grace, to give thanks for blessings
1.17received, to request healing for wounds endured, and to ask God to guide our leaders, bless our
1.18troops, and bring wholeness to the United States and its citizens; and
1.19WHEREAS, May 7, 2015, marks the 64th consecutive observance of the National Day
1.20of Prayer in cities and towns throughout the United States and provides us with a powerful
1.21opportunity to humble ourselves; and
2.1WHEREAS, this year we continue to pray for American armed services members and
2.2their families; and
2.3WHEREAS, the citizens of Minnesota have the opportunity to gather on this day to pray in
2.4their own way to acknowledge that God is not limited to space and time and that he hears our
2.5every word and knows the right time to respond to our prayers; NOW, THEREFORE,
2.6BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it recognizes May 7, 2015,
2.7as a Day of Prayer in the state of Minnesota and commends this observance to all citizens.
2.8BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a
2.9copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by her signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
2.10Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the National Prayer Committee.
