1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Bob Lessard on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
1.3WHEREAS, Bob Lessard was born on May 18, 1931, along with his twin brother, and he
1.4graduated from International Falls High School; and
1.5WHEREAS, Bob began guiding on Rainy Lake when he was in high school, and he began
1.6guiding on Otukamamoan (Trout) Lake in Ontario, where he operated a fishing camp in 1947; and
1.7WHEREAS, he also ran Great Bear Lodge on Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territory
1.8of Canada; and
1.9WHEREAS, Bob served in the military during the Korean War; and
1.10WHEREAS, he bought and continues to operate Sunny Beach Resort on Rainy Lake and
1.11Otukamamoan Lake, and he owned and operated the Viking Cruise boat on Rainy Lake; and
1.12WHEREAS, Bob ran for the Minnesota House against then-Speaker Irv Anderson from
1.13International Falls and lost narrowly in a recount; then, he was first elected to the Minnesota State
1.14Senate in 1976, and went on to serve in the Senate for 26 years; and
1.15WHEREAS, he served as Chair of the Veterans and General Legislation Committee and
1.16the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and was nicknamed the "Ol' Trapper" by his
1.17longtime hunting and fishing buddy, former Vikings Coach Bud Grant; and
1.18WHEREAS, Bob was former Governor Jesse Ventura's only Independence Party legislative
1.19caucus member, and he also served as a member of the IRRRB and the LCCMR; and
1.20WHEREAS, he was the author of many important pieces of legislation, including the
1.21creation of the Minnesota State Lottery and the Lessard/Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund; and
1.22WHEREAS, Bob is the proud father of five children; and
1.23NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.24congratulates Bob Lessard on a remarkable career serving the citizens of his district and the State
1.25of Minnesota, and extends best wishes to him on his 80th birthday.
1.26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.27enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.28Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Bob Lessard.
