1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Jessica Davis on being named Minnesota's 2019 Teacher of the Year.
1.3WHEREAS, the Minnesota Teacher of the Year program is the oldest and most prestigious
1.4recognition program in Minnesota to honor excellence in education; and
1.5WHEREAS, a member of the teaching profession must be a caring and committed person
1.6who believes in the ability of all students to learn; and
1.7WHEREAS, Jessica Davis earned a bachelor's degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry.
1.8She had not planned to be a teacher, but upon getting a job at William Mitchell School of Law, she
1.9found that she was especially skilled at navigating the education system; and
1.10WHEREAS, she went on to earn a teaching license and a master's degree in teaching, and
1.11she began working at South St. Paul Secondary School in 2009; and
1.12WHEREAS, Jessica teaches advanced algebra to juniors and seniors and leads a computer
1.13science class, giving valuable hands-on experience in growing professional fields; and
1.14WHEREAS, Jessica acts as an adviser at her school's African American student organization
1.15where she actively helps students of color to realize their potential and connect with professionals
1.16of color; and
1.17WHEREAS, Jessica is the 55th recipient of the prestigious award, and the first from the
1.18South St. Paul district. By winning this honor, she will represent the profession and serve as an
1.19advocate for education and spokesperson for teachers by making presentations, meeting with
1.20policymakers, and attending meetings; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.22thanks and commends Jessica Davis for her dedication to teaching and to her students, and it
1.23congratulates her on being named Minnesota's 2019 Teacher of the Year.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Jessica Davis.
