1.1A Senate resolution 1.2honoring the life and work of Harvey Nelson. 1.3WHEREAS, Harvey Nelson studied wildlife management at the University of Minnesota 1.4and earned a master's degree in natural resources conservation at Michigan State; and 1.5WHEREAS, Nelson joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1950; and 1.6WHEREAS, he served at various wildlife refuges around the Midwest, regularly earning 1.7promotions to research and management positions of greater responsibility; and 1.8WHEREAS, in 1974 Nelson was promoted to associate director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife 1.9Service in Washington, D.C., where he helped to forge new policies and procedures in response to 1.10increasingly sophisticated scientific approaches to wildlife management; and 1.11WHEREAS, Nelson returned to Minnesota in 1980 to manage fish and wildlife programs 1.12in eight states and in 1987 was named executive director of the North American Waterfowl 1.13Management Plan, an ambitious conservation initiative combining state, federal, and private 1.14resources; and 1.15WHEREAS, in 2000 Harvey Nelson was honored by Outdoor News as Man of the 1.16Year; and 1.17WHEREAS, after his retirement, Nelson remained actively dedicated to conservation, 1.18serving on the board of the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance, lobbying for the passage of the 1.19state's Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment in 2008, and attending and organizing various 1.20symposiums, primarily involving wetlands and waterfowl management; and 2.1WHEREAS, Harvey Nelson passed away in February 2010 at age 85, leaving behind him a 2.2legacy to be acknowledged and appreciated by outdoorsmen and scientists across Minnesota and 2.3the nation; NOW, THEREFORE, 2.4BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it honors the life and 2.5work of Harvey Nelson. 2.6BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an 2.7enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Chair of the 2.8Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Harvey Nelson.
