1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the contributions of Terese Hemmingsen to the field of nursing in Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, those civic-minded individuals who work tirelessly in their communities perform
1.4an important service deserving of special legislative recognition; and
1.5WHEREAS, Terese Hemmingsen, an Associate Professor of Nursing at Winona State
1.6University - Rochester, earned a Master of Science in Nursing Education and a Doctor of Nursing
1.7Practice, demonstrating a sustained commitment to academic excellence; and
1.8WHEREAS, Terese founded and implemented the Biel Leadership Fellowship Program,
1.9establishing a scholarship initiative designed to advance nursing leadership beyond the bedside.
1.10The program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and equips nursing students with the skills to
1.11lead across health care systems; and
1.12WHEREAS, she brings 32 years of diverse clinical nursing experience, including practice
1.13in labor and delivery, newborn and postpartum care, emergency medicine, medical-surgical nursing,
1.14community nursing, and outpatient diabetes education; and
1.15WHEREAS, she strengthened rural clinical education by enhancing student learning
1.16opportunities at Gundersen St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Wabasha. These efforts increased student
1.17exposure to rural health care, care of older adults, and community-based wellness; and
1.18WHEREAS, she pioneered specialty certifications at Gundersen St. Elizabeth's Hospital,
1.19becoming one of the first Certified Lactation Counselors, Certified Childbirth Educators, and
1.20Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. She led the expansion and enhancement of
1.21inpatient obstetrics and lactation education, as well as the outpatient diabetes education program;
1.22and
1.23WHEREAS, Terese has educated and mentored hundreds of nursing students during six
1.24years of faculty service at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing, including mentoring
2.1graduate nursing students attending the leadership and nursing education masters and doctoral
2.2programs; and
2.3WHEREAS, she has prepared more than 1,300 nursing graduates for registered nurse practice
2.4over 13 years as a professor at Winona State University - Rochester, contributing significantly to
2.5the regional nursing workforce and advancing professional standards in nursing education; and
2.6NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.7congratulates Terese Hemmingsen on her many years of outstanding contributions to the nursing
2.8profession in Minnesota.
2.9BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.10enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.11Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Terese Hemmingsen.
