Senate File No. 2596 increases the criminal penalty for transferring a pistol or semiautomatic military-style assault weapon to an ineligible person from a gross misdemeanor to a felony (statutory maximum sentence of two years imprisonment and/or $10,000 fine). Also increases the maximum fine for an aggravated offense (where the ineligible person uses the firearm within a year to commit a felony crime of violence) from $10,000 to $20,000.
