S.F. No. 888 - Authorizing Emergency Assistance Grants for Postsecondary Students

Author: Senator Justin D. Eichorn

Prepared By: Joan White, Senate Counsel (651/296-3814)

Date: March 18, 2019

S.F. No. 888 is a blank appropriation for emergency assistance for postsecondary students.  The bill requires the Commissioner of the Office of Higher Education to make grants on a matching basis to postsecondary institutions with a demonstrable homeless student population.  Grant money must be used to meet immediate needs of the student that could result in the student not completing the term or their program, including but not limited to housing, food, and transportation.  Emergency assistance does not impact the amount of state financial aid received. The commissioner shall partner with interested postsecondary institutions and determine the application process and the grant amounts.
