S.F. No. 2593 - Community Destination Sign Pilot Program (A-1 Delete-Everything Amendment)

Author: Senator Thomas M. Bakk

Prepared By: Krista Boyd, Senate Fiscal Analyst (651/296-7681)

Date: March 26, 2014

Section 1 creates the community destination sign pilot program.

Subdivision 1 defines terms.  "City" is the city of Two Harbors.  "General retail services" is a business that sells goods to the end-use consumer at retail.

Subdivision 2 directs the Commissioner of Transportation to consult with the city of Two Harbors to establish a community destination sign pilot program for wayfinding to locations of interest to the traveling public.

Subdivision 3 describes attractions and destinations that are eligible for signs, including minor traffic generators and general retail services identified in a community wayfinding program.  Design specifications are to be established by the commissioner, in coordination with the city, to include the city name and logo and up to five attractions on a sign.

Subdivision 4 requires the city to pay all signage costs.  The commissioner may not impose fees for the program.

Subdivision 5 sunsets the pilot program on January 1, 2022.

This section is effective when the city complies with statutory local approval requirements.
