Under current law, a Compensation Council assists the legislature with setting salaries for members of the legislature, the justices of the Supreme Court, judges of the Court of Appeals and district court, and certain agency heads. This bill eliminates the Compensation Council's duty to assist the legislature with setting the salaries for members of the legislature, by amending three sections of statutes governing the Compensation Council (section 15A.082, subdivisions 1, 3 and 4). This bill is effective the day after enactment. Therefore, on enactment, there will not be any council or group providing advice or suggestions to the Legislature as to Legislator salaries. Other bills introduced this session (i.e. SF No. 2575 and SF No. 2742) establish a new council to serve this funciton, but will be establshed only if the proposed constitutional amendment is adopted by voters in 2016.
