S.F. No. 2711 - Probation Officers Employment Protections

Author: Senator Lyle Koenen

Prepared By: Chris Turner, Senate Fiscal Analyst (651/296-4350)

Date: March 18, 2014

The bill provides that when a district or county court takes over correctional services presently provided by the commissioner of corrections (change of status from a Department of Corrections (DOC) county to a County Probation Officer (CPO) county),  probation officers receive the following employment protections.

  • Years of service in the DOC are to be given full credit for future sick leave and vacation accrual purposes.
  • Officers shall be transferred in grade with all benefits they enjoyed when in the employ of DOC.
  • Officers shall suffer no loss of salary, accrued vacation or sick leave benefits.

The bill requires such employees to serve a six-month probationary period.  The probation period may be extended.

The bill gives employees moving from state to county employment as probation officers the same protections the law provides for probation officers moving from county to state employment.
