S.F. No. 1778 - Expanding Disclosure Requirements for Conflicts of Interest and Statements of Economic Interest - (Committee Engrossment)

Author: Senator Kent Eken

Prepared By: Alexis C. Stangl, Senate Counsel (651/296-4397)

Date: March 16, 2014

Section 1 adds references to an official’s spouse in the section on disclosure of potential conflicts of interest.  This section expands the requirement from only considering the official’s financial interest to consider the financial interests of both the official and the official’s spouse.

Section 2 requires an official to include information from both the official and the official’s spouse when completing the statement of economic interest.  A new category of information is required.  The statement of economic interest must include a list of business or professional activity codes from which the official or the official’s spouse receives more than $50 a month as a consultant or independent contractor.  The statement of economic interest must distinguish between the items reported on behalf of the official and the official’s spouse.  This section is effective for statements of economic interest required to be filed on or after January 1, 2015.
