Section 1 [Insurance Contributions; Former Correctional Employees] requires the Department of Corrections to make the employer contribution for hospital, medical, and dental benefits under the State Employee Group Insurance Program (SEGIP) for eligible persons  This requirement applies to a person who:  

(1) was employed by the Department of Corrections at a state institution and was a member of the general plan of the Minnesota State Retirement System;

(2) was assaulted by an inmate at a Department of Corrections institution; and

(3) was determined to be totally and permanently disabled under laws governing the Minnesota State Retirement System. 

This requirement continues until the eligible person reaches 65, provided the person makes required employee contributions. 

This section applies to a person assaulted by an inmate on or after October 1, 2010, and employer contributions must be made retroactive to July 1, 2013.
