S.F. No. 393 - Special License Plate for Retired Firefighters (First Engrossment)

Author: Senator David J. Tomassoni

Prepared By: Krista Boyd, Senate Fiscal Analyst (651/296-7681)

Date: March 21, 2011

This bill establishes special license plates for retired firefighters.  The applicant must:

(1)   be a retired member of an eligible fire department, present a letter from the fire chief affirming that the applicant retired in good standing after having served ten or more years, and be a registered owner of a passenger automobile, pickup truck or motorcycle;

(2)   pay a fee of $10 for the set of special plates, along with other required fees in current law; and

(3)   comply with laws and rules on motor vehicles and licensing of drivers.

The Commissioner of Public Safety will design the retired firefighter plate emblem to be distinguishable from the existing firefighter special plate.  Retired firefighter special plates may be transferred to another registered vehicle of the owner upon payment of a $5 fee.  All fees collected from sale or transfer of these plates are to be deposited in the vehicle services operating account in the special revenue fund.

The plates are exempt from statutory requirements concerning establishment and dicontinuance of special plates.
