About the Debate:
The Senate Crime Prevention and Public Safety Committee took testimony on (SF 222) a bill that would change Minnesota's handgun laws. The bill would take away discretion from police chiefs and county sherrifs and issue handgun permits in a more unified way with certain critera.

Proponents testified saying the bill is a moderate and reasonable and allows law abiding citizens the ability to protect themselves. Opponents testified saying the bill takes local governments out of the issue and doesn't take into account a person's emotional state before issuing them a handgun permit.

The areas causing the most disagreement include how a law abiding citizen is defined and where a concealed weapon could be carried under the bill.

The committee spent the entire time taking testimony and will continue the the issue on Wednesday, March 19th at 12:30.
