| The Minnesota Transportation Coalition unveils a comprehensive transportation funding package. The plan, authored by Senator Dean Johnson (DFL-Willmar) and Representative Tom Workman (R-Chanhassen),authorizes $2.27 billion in new transportation funding over five years. The funding includes: $1.48 billion to highways; $333 million to local roads; and $444 million to transit. General obligation bonds would provide $100 million a year and trunk highway bonds would provide $150 million a year financed with a phased in 3.5 cent gas tax increase in 04 and 05. Also, the plan puts a question on the 2002 ballot to constitutional dedicate all of the motor vehicle sales tax to transportation, providing $1 billion in new funding by 2005. David Olson, president of the MN Chamber of Commerce and representing the MN Transportation Coalition, also made statements. |
