| The Senate took up Calendar items and passes SF 1857 - a bill that finances a new major league baseball stadium on Special Orders. On a vote of 37-30, SF 1857 passed as amended after many hours of debate. The open-air stadium would seat 42,000 and would be roof-ready. It would cost up to $330 million with funds being provided by private and public sources. The bill is site nuetral and requires a referendum vote (local taxes to levy for the stadium)on June 4, 2002. The bill authorizes the host city to impose a $2 per vehicle surcharge on parking and $1.50 per day for car rentals. Other taxes include: 13 percent wholesale tax on sports memorabilia sold in the seven county metro area; 6.5 percent sales tax on any item sold at the new stadium or Metrodome; 10 percent admissions tax at new stadium or increase from 10 to 15 percent at Metrodome; and a fee on rental space used by news organizations covering the games.
