SF No. 2377
Floor Session Date: Friday, May 18, 2001
Video Coverage: Senate adopts a legislative and congressional redistricting bill (SF 2377) and takes up other items on Special Orders
About the Session:
The Senate passes a legislative and congressional redistricting bill (SF 2377) and takes up other items on the Special Orders Calendar. After each new census, the legislature is required to redraw legislative and congressional district lines to reflect population shifts. Both Senate DFLers and Senate Republicans drafted their own redistricting plans.

The Senate DFL congressional plan (SF 2377) would leave St. Paul and Minneapolis in separate districts and expands the urban districts to include more suburbs while the Senate Republican plan would merge St. Paul and Minneapolis into one congressional district and create three entirely suburban districts instead of the current two. The Republican plan failed on a 38-27 party line vote.

The Senate DFL legislative plan paired Republican incumbents in ten districts and DFLers in one. The Senate Republican plan paired Democratic incumbents in six districts and Republicans in none. The Republican plan failed on a 38-27 party line vote.

Senator Lawrence Pogemiller, DFL-Minneapolis, authored Senate File 2377. The bill passed 35-28.
