| SF No. 0296 | |
| Committee Hearing Date: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 | |
| Committee: Crime Prevention | |
| Video Coverage: (Continued) Increases the tax on alcoholic beverages to fund chemical dependency prevention, enforcement, and treatment initiatives. | |
| About the Bill: | |
| This legislation imposes a new
"drink" tax to fund chemical treatment and to defray law enforcement costs.
Marty believes the bill will raise $110 million annually. These funds will pay
for treatment for people without insurance coverage, add more state troopers
assigned to enforce DWI laws, cover substance-related corrections costs, and
will be used for alcohol abuse education and prevention targeted at underage
drinking. Senator John Marty, DFL-Roseville, authored Senate File 0296.
The bill passed the committee after being amended to delete all dollar amounts listed in the bill. It now goes to the Health and Family Security Committee. |
