About the Bill:
This proposal increases the penalties for chronic drunk driving. The bill applies a felony penalty if a person commits a DWI within 10 years of the first of 3 or more prior impairment driving convictions (i.e. the fourth DWI in 10 years). Currently, the penalty is a misdemeanor. The bill carries a maximum penalty of 7 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $14,000. Senator David Johnson, DFL-Bloomington, authored Senate File 0264.
